Game of Thrones and Other Blogging Lessons

I confess. I was a bad blogger last week. I wish I could say that I had a great excuse for missing the Friday Field Trip, but the truth of the matter is…I was weak. I cheated on the blog with movies. A lot of movies. And tv shows. Between Ryan Reynolds in twinkly green spandex and a marathon session of Game of Thrones, I really didn’t stand much of a chance. I checked Amazon to buy more hours in a day but they were all out. This week, however, is a new week. I’ve dug myself out of my tub of popcorn and have learned my lesson. In fact, I’ve learned five.

Top Five Blogging Lessons I’ve Learned (While Playing Hooky)

1.) “Mutant and proud” – Amy, X-Men First Class
Know what your mutant power is and own it, baby. Don’t be afraid to be different.  Speak your mind and use your own unique voice. Black and yellow jumpsuits are optional.

2.) “Production value!”  - Charles, Super Eight
Charles knew that production value was going to spell the difference for his little Super 8 Zombie movie at the film competition. The same principle holds true for blogs. Words are great, but posting them on a spruced up page is even better. It’s no different from tidying up the living room when you have visitors. Offer cupcakes and I’ll love you forever.

3.) “Individually, we are vulnerable. Together, we are unstoppable!” – Sinestro, Green Lantern
Blogging is about connecting with people and being in a community. Half of what makes a blog a joy to read is the interaction that takes place. Comments, blog hops, guest posts – they keep the virtual cobwebs away.

4.) “This is a real tattoo!” – Stu, The Hangover II
“Drunk” posting is never a good idea. While it’s great to speak your mind, it’s also worthwhile to take time to think about your posts /comments and make sure that you aren’t immortalizing something you’ll regret the second after you click “publish.” You don’t lose anything by taking time to step back and think about what you want to say and how you want to say it.

5.)  “Winter is coming.” – Ned Stark, Game of Thrones
Um, okay…I don’t really have a lesson for this quote, but hey, isn’t it Just.So.Cool? If you think of one, let me know! :D

Yeah! I can post a comment!!!! I was feeling lost for awhile there. I loved Super 8 those kids were so funny. I have been on a movie binge myself this weekend after the week from hell I had....so I understand. And I agree with the sprucing up of the blog. I am on hold for a complete redesign and I can not wait. Have a great day!

I want to add one:

"Know what your mutant power is and own it, baby" - Sam, The Slight Detour.

Great lessons. :-)

Hilarious post.

I'm not sure I could have focused on anything Ryan Reynold's said, though...I sort of going into a deaf phase when he's onscreen...him and Clive Owen...

Did you ever see him in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza? He was hilarious in that show.

Ryan Reynolds is all the excuuse you need for me!!! Hope you had fun!!! I love your rules of blogging, very smart and clever as always. Your blog is always a pleasure to visit and to return again!!! Have a great week!!

oooh, my kind of post, Sammy :)
And there's a cool quote from GAME OF THRONES, episode six - FIRE CANNOT KILL A DRAGON! :)
Love how you connected movies with lessons!

Game of Thrones has a lot of great one liners. I just watched the finale, and boy does HBO own my loyalty at this point. Season two, why so far away?

I have never seen any of these movies, but I just might have to since they have such great blogging advice in them. We are so addicted that even when we're not blogging we think about blogging lol

Excellent advice for bloggers. You're right, it's the community and interaction of blogging that I can't get enough of. And I agree, production value matters.
Great post.

P.S. There's a spoiler in it, for whoever haven't seen the Episode 9 yet.

Love the post! You're so much fun!

Around here we say "Winter is coming-- turn up the heat, pack your longjohns and chocolate bars in the survival bag, throw chains and sand in the trunk just in case, then kick back and enjoy freezing you a** off." Think that applies?
It might.
Blogs need passion, nutrients and clothes, a little dirt along with something to tie them down, and then you can kick back and enjoy...

What a cute post, I always know I'll end up smiling when I visit your blog. :)
I'm getting ready to start on a marathon of Game of Thrones. I've heard so much about it, I can't wait to watch.

Everybody deserves a break from the routine. As for the quote about winter coming, that'll fit right in here. It's summer now, so bask in it, and enjoy it, because before you know it, it'll be over. So, by golly, play your hooky now, while you can, and worry about buckling down later when the winter winds are blowing.

Super 8 was awesome! I just saw it last night. "Production value!" indeed. :)

And I love that line, "Winter is coming." Gives me chills every time! (pun intended)

Speaking of movies... actually, I don't really have anything to add. My movie experience, of late, has been blotted out by a 30th anniversary showing of Raiders of the Lost Ark at Skywalker Ranch.

And I'm just scared to go see Green Lantern. Really scared.

Great points and yes, drunk blogging is definitely a bad idea! :)

Well done post. I felt your pain in many the same ways. I was thinking about mutants after watching the 'First Class' movie and wondering how many beatings by evil mutants with better control over their powers it would take before one of the good guys started to focus more on his training and truly find out the damage they could do with their powers.

I have one about Winter Samantha! One never knows when a temporary 'Winter' will visit your life, and at those times it behoves the wise writer to have several good, nay excellent posts tucked away that they can bring out and post through the worst blizzard! Sending love your way, Elizabeth.

Ah, the drunk blogger. Very entertaining indeed. Loved this post! I saw the first episode of Game of Thrones and could totally get addicted easily. I've definitely cheated on the blog before...most recently, with a marathon of Doctor Who.

Glad you're back! :) I love your posts!

Haha, I love that you learned blogging lessons from the movies! And yes, Ned Stark is the coolest. Can't wait for next season!

I want to see most of these movies. Especially The Hangover 2 and Super 8. They both look interesting. In very different ways.

I really want to see "The Green Lantern" Yes, I am a fan of superheroes.
And I haven't even seen the first Hangover yet!
I am so behind in movies.

Sophia Chang said...

Ah yes, #1-3 have also taken up my time in the last few weeks, but luckily I have not succumbed to Game of Thrones yet. I have this thing about reading the books first, and that book is just waaaayyy too long for my aging attention span... :(

Who doesn't learn lessons from movies? It's like the only way TO learn lessons!

You're made of awesome. I'm sad that I've been so distant, especially when your island background now has me in a coma. Love it.

Lately I've been revising my chick lit novel while watching chick flicks. It's awesome - I can call it research :)

Woo! The comment function is FINALLY working!!!

Okay so now for the comment. hahaha - given your track record, Sam, I think its okay to take a Va-K. :D Not to mention you've been uber busy as of late.

I just think we should be grateful you've been keeping up w/ Dr. Who otherwise we wouldn't see you for like a month.

I will definately agree with you about your blogging points. It is ALL about community and rallying around each other. That's what keeps our blogs alive and makes it fun.

Viva la Bloggie-verse!

How did I not notice you before now? You were pretty much dead on with your blogging lessons, especially the one about 'production values'. I so appreciate a blog that gives me something visually along with the regular dose of balloon juice that we all spout. Yours is more entertaining than most.

Stephanie Faris said...

It's so funny, I tried drunk blogging on MySpace long ago. Everyone said the same thing...my writing didn't seem any different than regular. I STILL cleaned it up and made sure the grammar and punctuation were perfect!

We all need a break every once in a while, Sam. Fun post! :) And I went to see Super 8, too! By the way, hours in a day are available again at Amazon -- full price and without the FREE Super Saver Shipping. ;D
